Self Employed Payroll

If you are registered self-employed, already running a sole trader business, or considering it, Genius can help. We work with a number of clients who still rely on highly skilled and qualified self-employed workers who are left to decide how, when and if to approach a job.

If you engage with Genius as a self-employed subcontractor,
the supply chain generally looks like this:

Due to a change in the law if you are subject to any supervision, direction or control whilst on assignment (or even have a contractual right to supervision, direction and control) then self-employment is not an option.

CIS Payroll

If you’re self-employed and working in the construction industry you have to register with the Construction Industry Scheme, or CIS. CIS covers most construction work to buildings, including site preparation, decorating and refurbishment.

Exceptions

You don’t have to register if you only do certain jobs, including:

  • architecture and surveying
  • scaffolding hire (with no labour)
  • carpet fitting
  • delivering materials
  • work on construction sites that is clearly not construction, (e.g. running a canteen or site facilities)

Once you’re registered we’ll verify your UTR (Unique tax Reference) number, and make deductions at either 20%, 30% or make a gross payment in full dependant on your CIS status. If you need to register, or request more information, you’ll need to call HMRC’s CIS helpline on 0300 200 3210.

More information – HMRC’s guide for subcontractors provides much more detail on the scheme, including what is and isn’t covered.
